Long-Term Survival of a Flat-on-Flat Total Condylar Knee Arthroplasty Fixed with a Hybrid Cementing Technique for Tibial Components

Abstract: The authors confirm the good rates of success and the long-term survival of this specific implant and the effectiveness of the tibial hybrid cementing technique, which is still debated among researchers.

“…An orthopaedic surgery is a "clean" and successful surgery, as widely demonstrated by several long-term series particularly for hip and knee procedures (Sharkey et al 2002 ;Ritter 2009 ;Corbett et al 2010 ;Carulli et al 2012 ;Toossi et al 2013 ). However, the annual worldwide increasing of the number of hip and knee arthroplasties is leading to a proportional rise of the complications: among these, infections to date represent one of the major risks of failure, reaching up to 15 and 25 % of the indications to revision in hip and knee surgery, respectively (Babkin et al 2007 ).…”

“…Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) is one of the most successful orthopaedic procedures for the treatment of osteoarthritis [1, 2]. Particularly high rates of patient satisfaction have been achieved in recent decades thanks to the significant improvement in both surgical technique, implant design, and the characteristics of biomaterials.…”

“…Such cases may be treated by a revision arthroplasty. New materials, modern designs, and meticulous and less invasive surgical techniques have contributed to a longer survivorship of the implants (2,5,(14)(15)(16). Among all the mentioned improvements, the recent acquisition of the complex mechanisms of osseointegration between implants and host bone have gained attention, accordingly to the methods of evaluation of these peculiar interactions (17)(18)(19)(20)(21).…”
