The worldwide decline in amphibian populations has made heavy metal pollution a subject of interest. The aim of this work was to analyze the effect of sublethal doses of cadmium (Cd) on the liver, kidney, and blood of Rhinella arenarum specimens. Serum markers indicative of hepatic injury (gamma glutamyltransferase, alkaline phosphatase, pseudo cholinesterase, and total cholesterol) and markers of renal dysfunction (blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, calcium, and glucose) showed variation in animals treated with a 0.5 mg/kg dose compared to controls. Histopathological images revealed alterations in the liver (hepatocyte ballooning and hyperplasia of Kupffer cells) and kidney (renal tubular lumen dilation with tubular necrosis) of animals with abnormal serum markers. The above-mentioned lesions were more evident with the 5 mg/kg dose. With the 0.5 mg/kg dose, hematological values remained normal with the exception of the leukocyte formula. Animals treated with 5 mg/kg showed a significant decrease in both white and red blood cell counts and hematocrit and hemoglobin values. Differential leukocyte counts showed neutrophilia, monocytosis, and lymphopenia. Morphological aberrations were found in white and red blood cells. Results indicated that the evaluation of morphological and functional parameters in kidney, liver, and blood is required in order to monitor amphibian populations exposed to chemical contaminants.

This paper investigates the toxicity of cadmium (Cd) on young stages of the common Asian toad Duttaphrynus melanostictus (Schneider 1799). Signs of acute toxicity were evident in tadpoles repeatedly exposed to five concentrations ranging from 0.002 to 2 mg L(-1)of Cd which included environmentally relevant levels. Mortality at concentrations of 0.02 mg L(-1) and above was enhanced from 2 % at 0.02 mg L(-1) to 100 % at 1 mg L(-1), in a dose-dependent manner. Significant growth impairment was evident at 0.20 mg L(-1) with the larvae being markedly smaller. Delayed metamorphosis and retarded swimming were also observed. Therefore levels of Cd recorded in some freshwater bodies in Sri Lanka (e.g. 0.2 mg L(-1)) may be detrimental to the young stages of D. melanostictus.

Some creatures are very sensitive to water borne pollutants and can be used as useful bio-indicators of water pollutions. The present study used these bio-indicators to determine the status regarding health of freshwater habitats. The study was carried out to quantify Zn in kidney and liver of Rana tigrina from different aquatic habitats (canal, fish pond and sewage water) by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Liver and kidney tissues of R. tigrina from sewage habitat showed elevated levels of Zn compared to those collected from canal and fish pond water habitats. Hence, it may be concluded that R. tigrina is one of the good bio-indicator species for heavy metals. It can be used to assess the heavy metal load and pollution of aquatic ecosystems.
