Long-term virologic outcomes following bariatric surgery in patients with HIV

Abstract: Summary The management of morbid obesity and its metabolic complications among HIV-infected patients requires a multi-disciplinary approach, with surgical interventions as one option. We sought to assess the long-term durability of ART among HIV-infected patients undergoing bariatric procedures for the management of morbid obesity. During the study period, 7 patients underwent a bariatric surgery procedure for the management of morbid obesity: 3 patients underwent sleeve gastrectomy, 2 patients underwent lapar… Show more

“…Of the 78 patients with HIV infection identified in the literature who underwent bariatric surgery, 15% of patients had some form of complication. These complications were unrelated to HIV, most commonly minor, and generally occurred during the early postoperative period with a limited number of patients experiencing a complication one‐year after surgery . Of these patients being treated for HIV in whom viral load data were reported, 96% (45/47) remained virally suppressed following bariatric surgery .…”

“…1,2 Of the estimated 1.2 million Americans living with HIV, approximately 30%-40% are considered overweight or obese. 3 Obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m 2 , may impact the health of PLWH. 4 Not only does it impede physical activity and quality of life, it increases mortality rates, risk of comorbidities, and is one of the largest causes of preventable chronic diseases and healthcare costs.…”
