Longer duration of asthma is significantly associated with increased RV/TLC ratio

Abstract: RV/TLC ratio may be a better indicator than FEV1/FVC ratio to detect airway obstruction related to longer duration of asthma. Lung volume measurements should be done in addition to spirometry to detect changes related to airway obstruction in patients with longer duration of asthma.

“…The correlation between the difference in FeNO before and after EC and the corresponding differences in RV and TLC in the asthmatic patients means that the deterioration of the airway inflammation is significantly associated with air trapping and hyperinflation, something not observed in the control group. This is particularly interesting since these defects are not as common in asthma as in COPD and when they are observed in asthma, they are associated with longer disease duration and fixed airflow obstruction[ 17 , 18 ].…”

“…Air trapping can be quantified by the ratio of residual volume (RV) to total lung capacity (TLC) (7). Several studies have found the clinical significance of the RV/TLC ratio in managing chronic respiratory diseases (8)(9)(10). The RV/TLC ratio is also known as a predictive index for various adverse outcomes of COPD, such as a decline in lung function and increased mortality (11)(12)(13).…”
