The breeding Sand martins of a census area covering c. 1075 km2 in Scania, southern Sweden, have been counted between 1964 and 1984. Owing to natural barriers (sea, wooded mountain) the study population is practically self‐contained. The average density figure of the census area, 2.54 pairs/km2, should be valid for as much as 2,500 km2 of south‐west Scania. During the same period the population has exhibited a remarkably consistent pattern of fluctuation that suggests a stable limit cycle with a period of c. 11 years. Populationand colony developments conform. The cyclic pattern may apply to a much larger area than southern Scania.

Human activities have degraded riparian systems in numerous ways, including homogenization of the floodplain landscape and minimization of extreme flows. We analyzed the effects of changes in these and other factors for extinction-colonization dynamics of a threatened Bank Swallow population along the upper Sacramento River, California, U.S.A. We monitored Bank Swallow distributions along a 160-km stretch of the river from 1986-1992 and 1996-2003 and tested whether site extinctions and colonizations corresponded with changes in maximum river discharge, surrounding land cover, estimated colony size, temperature, and precipitation. Colonization probabilities increased with maximum discharge. Extinction probabilities decreased with proximity to the nearest grassland, decreased with colony size, and increased with maximum discharge. To explore the implications for restoration, we incorporated the statistically estimated effects of distance to grassland and maximum discharge into simple metapopulation models. Under current conditions, the Bank Swallow metapopulation appears to be in continued decline, although stable or increasing numbers cannot be ruled out with the existing data. Maximum likelihood parameters from these regression models suggest that the Sacramento River metapopulation could be restored to 45 colonies through moderate amounts of grassland restoration, large increases in discharge, or direct restoration of nesting habitat by removing approximately 10% of existing bank protection (riprap) from suitable areas. Our results highlight the importance of grassland restoration, mixed benefits of restoring high spring discharge, and the importance of within-colony dynamics as areas for future research.

L’Hirondelle de rivage Riparia riparia revient annuellement sur un même site pour y établir une colonie. Ces sites sont naturels ou d’origine anthropique mais toujours soumis à des changements permanents. L’espèce se caractérise par sa capacité à creuser des tunnels dans lesquels elle mène à bien son cycle de reproduction. Plusieurs auteurs ont tenté d’identifier les critères utilisés par les hirondelles pour choisir un site favorable à l’installation d’une colonie Parmi les nombreux paramètres qui peuvent contribuer à expliquer la localisation des colonies, les paramètres morpho-sédimentaires ont été assez peu documentés. Parmi les facteurs abiotiques, la composition des particules du sol semble jouer un rôle important dans la profondeur des tunnels qui est directement proportionnelle au succès de reproduction. L’objectif de cet article est de contribuer à combler cette lacune à partir de travaux réalisés sur deux colonies situées en domaine littoral. Il s’agit d’étudier l’effet supposé des paramètres morpho-sédimentaires sur la présence et la disposition des tunnels, leur profondeur et si les sites colonisés possèdent des caractéristiques différentes des sites proches, favorables en apparence et pourtant non colonisés. Nous avons pris en considération plusieurs paramètres morphologiques des colonies et effectué des prélèvements sédimentologiques qui ont été ensuite analysés et comparés entre eux à l’aide de tests statistiques et de régressions linéaires. Nous montrons que, en baie du Mont Saint-Michel, les Hirondelles de rivage ne semblent pas choisir leur site de nidification en fonction de la nature du sédiment contrairement à ce que proposait une étude précédente menée sur un site continental. Au sein de chaque site, seules des différences très ténues ont été trouvées entre les secteurs colonisés et ceux qui ne l’étaient pas. Les hirondelles ont toutes choisi la même strate sédimentaire et ce, quel que soit le site. Le choix de cette strate est lié sans doute à la limitation du risque de submersion mais aussi au fait que la strate sommitale qui supporte la végétation est plus difficile à excaver en raison de la présence de racines et de rhizomes. Les caractéristiques du matériel sédimentaire s’avèrent toutefois structurant pour la profondeur des tunnels.
