Longevity and Efficacy of Bifenthrin Treatment on Desert-Pattern US Military Camouflage Netting Against Mosquitoes in a Hot-Arid Environment

Abstract: The current Department of Defense pest management system does not provide adequate protection from arthropod disease vectors to personnel deployed in support of US military operations. We hypothesized that military camouflage netting, ubiquitous around living and working areas in current US military operations in Africa and the Middle East, treated with a residual pesticide such as bifenthrin may reduce the presence of biting insects and improve the military pest management system. In this study, we examined t… Show more

“…Synthetic pyrethroids (SPs), a group of universal pesticides commonly applied to control field and household pests, have seen an increase in use after many governments issued restrictions on organophosphate and carbamate insecticides . The sale of SPs accounted for about 17% of the world insecticide market in 2007 .…”

“…In hot desert environments, angle the cages on the poles such that the insects are not in direct sunlight and may move into the shade of the side of the cage cylinder. 4. In both treatment and control areas, clearly label each sentinel cage with a permanent marker as it is put in place with two pieces of information: (1) the pole and/or box unique position code for later mapping in the GIS, and (2) pre-spray mortality for later correction for spray-induced mortality or mortality from exposure to the environment regardless of spray.…”

“…Pyrethroids were registered for use in a wide variety of agricultural and nonagricultural applications. Bifenthrin (2‐methylbiphenyl‐3‐ylmethyl‐(Z)‐(1RS)‐cis‐3‐(2‐chloro‐3, 3, 3‐trifluoroprop‐1‐enyl)‐2, 2‐dimethylcyclopropane carboxylate, BF), one of the most common pyrethroids, is widely used to control field and household pests (Suwannayod et al, ; Britch et al, ). As a result, humans may have suffered from potential exposure to this compound (Shafer et al, ).…”
