Longevity of colloidal activated carbon for in situ PFAS remediation at AFFF‐contaminated airport sites

Abstract: A review of state per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) guidelines indicates that four long‐chain PFAS (perfluorooctanesulfonic acid [PFOS] and perfluorooctanoic acid [PFOA] followed by perfluorohexanesulfonic acid [PFHxS] and perfluorononanoic acid [PFNA]) are the most frequently regulated PFAS compounds. Analysis of 17 field‐scale studies of colloidal activated carbon (CAC) injection at PFAS sites indicates that in situ CAC injection has been generally successful for both short‐ and long‐chain PFAS in t… Show more

“…In general, the lower the number of carbon molecules, the more mobile the compound is within the groundwater (Higgins & Luthy, 2006; Interstate Technology & Regulatory Council ITRC, PFAS—Per‐ and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances Team, 2020). In addition, when treating with sorption‐based technologies, the lower the number of carbons, the less affinity the compound will have to the media (Carey et al, 2022; Higgins & Luthy, 2006). Maximum groundwater concentrations of the six PFAS ranged from 348 ng/L for PFNA up to 31,240 ng/L for PFPeA before the injection of the CAC (Figures 7–9).…”

“…During the sampling event on Day 564, PFPeA was detected within the porewater sampled from Lysimeters 3I and 3D at concentrations of 50 and 40 ng/L, respectively (Figure 9). The apparent breakthrough of PFPeA after 1.5 years of treatment compared to the other PFAS detected within the porewater suggests that competitive sorption of PFAS is ongoing, with the longer carbon‐chained PFAS compounds being preferentially sorbed onto the CAC compared to PFPeA, which is a five carbon‐chained PFAS (Carey et al, 2022).…”

“…Therefore, long‐term monitoring is essential to understand the effectiveness of stabilization treatment with CAC. The longevity of a CAC barrier is directly proportional to the CAC fraction applied (Carey et al, 2022), therefore reapplication of CAC might be considered necessary in future scenarios.…”
