Longevity of silicone and polyurethane catheters in long‐term enteral feeding via percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy

Abstract: SUMMARYBackground: As percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is often used for many months or years, the longevity of the feeding tubes plays an important role in the global outcome and costs of PEG. Aim: A retrospective study to evaluate the longevity of silicone and polyurethane PEG catheters. Methods: The records of 297 patients who were fed via PEG for over 90 days were evaluated. The material of the PEG catheter, duration of follow-up, local complications, need to remove PEG because of tube deteriorati… Show more

“…Fungal colonization has been reported to play an important role in inducing deterioration of silicone tubes (8)(9)(10)18), and the use of polyurethane tubes has been recommended to prevent the problems posed by fungus colonization (18). Indeed, biofilm formation by C. albicans has been shown to be by far greater on silicone elastomer than on polyurethane (7), and polyurethane PEGs are known to last for a longer time than silicone PEGs (12). However, fungal colonization is very frequent in all kinds of PEG tubes (9,18,19), and in our series all polyurethane tubes were colonized by yeasts, independent of the duration of PEG use.…”

“…Polyvinyl tubes have fallen out of favor as they stiffen within a matter of hours following insertion into the gastrointestinal tract (Filippi et al 2005). There is disagreement regarding whether silicone tubing or polyurethane tubing is more resistant to this breakdown, but all tubes have small but definable mechanical failure rates (Prabhakaran et al 2012;Steiger and Matarese 2012;Sartori et al 2003). In fact, up to 20 % of tubes develop some degree of cracking or breakage.…”
