Longevity of the Brazilian underground tree Jacaranda decurrens Cham.

Abstract: Underground trees are a rare clonal growth form. In this survey we describe the branching pattern and estimate the age of the underground tree Jacaranda decurrens Cham. (Bignoniaceae), an endangered species from the Brazilian Cerrado, with a crown diameter of 22 meters. The mean age calculated for the individual was 3,801 years, making it one of the oldest known living Neotropical plants.

“…Several types of underground systems are responsible for more than 50% of the plant biomass in the CRs. These bud banks are an adaptation to disturbance (Klimes˘ová and Klimeš, 2007) represented in the CRs by savanna fires and the arid season (Conceição and Pirani, 2005;Kolbek and Alves, 2008), and sometimes can guarantee an impressive longevity for some species (Alves et al, 2013).…”

“…Clonality and long-lived individuals have been documented in a few studies, mostly of plants (Alves et al 2013;Neves et al 2014). Long-lived marine fish from the coastline of the SWAFR (Molony et al 2011) provide a novel case paralleling the long-lived terrestrial organisms dominating some Ocbils.…”

“…This strategy may contribute to individual longevity. Estimated age of the oldest individuals of Vellozia kolbekii is 551 years (Alves 1994), and 3801 years for Jacaranda decurrens (Bignoniaceae), one of the oldest known living Neotropical plants (Alves et al 2013). …”
