Longitudinal characteristics of resilience among adolescents: A high school student cohort study to assess the psychological impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake

Abstract: This initial study profiling the characteristics of resilience among adolescents suggests that resilience is a highly changeable component of mental health among people who have faced adversity. Resilience can be a useful indicator of recovery from adversity and a target of interventions for improving mental health conditions.

“…It is worth noting that resilience, proposed and developed by positive psychology and represents one's capability of survival and adjustment after experiencing serious traumatic events [26], can assist people to accommodate, handle or pass through the adversity based on a self-regulating psychological mechanism [27], and recover from disasters or keep psychologically health [28][29][30]. As FOC is a negative emotional experience, we speculate that resilience may have an impact on it.…”

“…Both theoretical and empirical evidence suggests that resilience is a mutable process, providing another avenue for researchers to explore. Okuyama and colleagues (2018) examined 760 high school students’ resilience over 3 years following a traumatic earthquake. The percentage of resilient students rose from 28.6% in the first year to 42.9% in the third, suggesting that resilience is a highly changeable mechanism.…”
