Longitudinal Examination of Obesity and Cognitive Function: Results from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging

Abstract: Background: Obesity indices (i.e. BMI, waist-to-hip ratio) show differential relationships to other health outcomes, though their association to neurocognitive outcome is unclear. Methods: We examined whether central obesity would be more closely associated with cognitive function in 1,703 participants from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. Results: Longitudinal mixed-effects regression models showed multiple obesity indices were associated with poorer performance in a variety of cognitive domains, in… Show more

“…Previous studies reported an association between obesity and insulin resistance [38,42]. The relation between insulin resistance and cognitive decline, especially memory impairment was mentioned in some studies [17]. Worldwide, approximately 347 million people are affected by diabetes, mainly type 2 diabetes.…”

“…Until now, data regarding the role of VD are inconclusive [16]. The link between cognitive impairment and obesity has been reported in previous studies mediated through insulin resistance [17,18]. The VD deficiency may be an additional mode of action that contributes to the cognitive impairment reported in the obese individuals.…”
