Longitudinal growth of polymer crystals from flowing solutions. VI. Melting behavior of continuous fibrillar polyethylene crystals

Abstract: The melting behavior of continuous fibrillar crystals of high‐molecular‐weight polyethylene has been investigated. The macrofibers were grown from dilute solutions in xylene subjected to Couette flow in the temperature range between 103 and 118.5°C. The thermograms, as determined by differential scanning calorimetry, exhibit three melting endotherms with peak temperatures at 141, 150.5, and 159.5°C after extrapolation to zero scan speed. All peaks were found to be strongly superheatable. Reduction of fiber len… Show more

“…Such situations can arise in highly oriented fibres which are constrained so that relaxation to a fully disordered melt is prevented. The constraints may only need to be external (clamping, embedding, see, for example [26]) but they can also be enhanced by internal cross-links introduced by radiation (see, for example, [27,28]). The o ~ h transformation was found to occur in the range 145-151~ mostly at the upper end of the range.…”

“…13 -15 In this structure, molecular chains arrange in an orderly hexagonal packing in a lateral plane perpendicular to the molecular axis, while there is no order in their direction, so that it is also termed pseudo-hexagonal structure. 16 -18 Such a phase transition of the constrained fiber is unique and interesting, and the phenomenon has been well known since the finding by Pennings et al 7 Further, it was also known that the phase transition gives a critical point to the heat-resistance because the strength of the fiber decreases drastically at the point. 7 Accordingly, studies about the phase transition are very important, so that some studies including authors' one have been done.…”

“…Above 143~ the activation energy for drawing was found to be higher than 300 kJ mo1-1 , which suggested a considerable transport of chains through extended-chain blocks, possibly in the hexagonal phase [27,28].…”
