Longitudinal pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) acceptability, initiation and adherence among criminal justice-involved adults in the USA: the Southern PrEP Cohort Study (SPECS) protocol

Abstract: IntroductionHIV prevalence among criminal justice (CJ)-involved adults is five times higher than the general population. Following incarceration, CJ-involved individuals experience multilevel barriers to HIV prevention. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a widely available, daily medication efficacious in preventing HIV. Little is known about PrEP knowledge, acceptability, initiation and sustained use among CJ-involved persons or about how these outcomes vary by multilevel factors. The Southern Pre-Exposure Pr… Show more

“…While RCTs likely have common features, such as tracking participant scheduling, recording payments, and collecting contact information, these features should be tailored to the protocol, participant needs, and stakeholders. We have spoken with colleagues who have implemented their own version of CRICIT [ 29 ]. One programmer without previous FMP experience was able to implement their EDC in about two months, which was similar to our experience and timeline.…”

“…Its goal is to understand how individual, social, and structural factors exacerbated by CL system involvement affect PrEP knowledge, acceptability, initiation, and sustained use. It has been described in detail elsewhere [ 24 ]. Study participants provided written consent and this study was approved by the institutional review boards at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (18–2466).…”

“…Participants in this study were recruited from The Southern Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Study (SPECS), an 18-month prospective cohort designed to understand PrEP (a daily medication to prevent HIV) knowledge, access, and use among those on community supervision in Florida, Kentucky, and North Carolina ( LeMasters et al, 2021 ). Individuals had to be 18 years or older, placed in community supervision in the past year, and clinically indicated for PrEP.…”
