Longitudinal whole-genome based comparison of carriage and infection associated Staphylococcus aureus in northern Australian dialysis clinics

Abstract: Background The study objective was to reveal reservoirs potentially leading to Staphylococcus aureus infections in haemodialysis clinic clients in the tropical north of the Australian Northern Territory (NT). This client population are primarily Aboriginal Australians who have a greater burden of ill health than other Australians. Reservoir identification will enhance infection control in this client group, including informing potential S. aureus decolonisation strategies. Methods and findings The study part… Show more

“…Interestingly, ST2454-t7867, a single locus variant of our ST9-t7867, is believed to be commonly associated with bovine mastitis in nearby India [ 47 ]. The remainder of the MSSA in this study belonged to strain type ST101, which is encountered in many places across the globe, colonizing and infecting both animals and humans [ 48 52 ]. ST101 has also been associated with bulk milk samples and mastitis in cattle [ 53 55 ].…”

“…We first analysed a previously described orthologous SNP matrix composed of 20,651 SNPs from 162 S. aureus isolates, four Staphylococcus argenteus isolates, and S. aureus Mu50, which was the reference genome for matrix construction (13). The isolates were from the STARRS study, which revealed potential S. aureus transmission events involving haemodialysis patients, and potential contacts in the clinical context environment, in the north of the Australian Northern Territory (13).…”

“…6 More recent is the emergence of a CC5 PVL+ CA-MRSA strain, also in north-western or northern Australia, and this appears to be in the expansion phase 11 perhaps repeating what was seen with ST93. Other PVL+ strains of current or recent significance in northern Australia include a ST30 MRSA that has long been associated with the Pacific region, and has reduced in prevalence in recent years, 8,12 and ST121 (CC121), which is a PVL+ strain mainly associated with south-east and east Asia, and almost always MSSA. 8,13,14 CA-MRSA strains are not always PVL+.…”
