Loop Closure Detection and SLAM in Vineyards with Deep Semantic Cues

Abstract: Automation of vineyards cultivation necessitates for mobile robots to retain accurate localization system. The paper introduces a stereo vision-based Graph-Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (Graph-SLAM) pipeline customtailored to the specificities of vineyard fields. Graph-SLAM is reinforced with a Loop Closure Detection (LCD) based on semantic segmentation of the vine trees. The Mask R-CNN network is applied to segment the trunk regions of images, on which unique visual features are extracted. These featu… Show more

“…Of course, no map of the agricultural environment is required for this approach. Furthermore, certain agricultural vehicles can perform mapping and localization using advanced techniques based on simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) (Zhao et al 2020;Papadimitriou et al 2022;Shu et al,2021). With the ability of map creation, path planning (Chen et al, 2020;Santos et al 2019) is also included in the agricultural vehicle, so that the vehicle has driving automation of level 3 (SAE, 2021).…”

“…The EU Project BACCHUS robot is a wheeled vehicle under development to harvest grapes and care for vineyards. The BACCHUS robot uses semantic segmentation of vineyard trunks for accurate robot motion estimation and consistent metric maps [7]. Our proposed navigation architecture takes the same segmentation approach, but it is used to identify discrete positions for the robot to walk to instead.…”
