Abstract

This two-volume report is a detailed design and operating documentation of the Los Alamos National Laboratory Controlled Air Incinerator (C Al) and is an aid to technology transfer to other Department of Energy contractor sites and the commercial sector. Volume I describes the CAI process, equipment, and performance, and it recommends modifications based on Los Alamos experience. It provides the necessary information for conceptual design and feasibility studies. Volume II provides descriptive engineering information such as drawings, specifications, calculations, and costs. It aids duplication of the process at other facilities. SUMMARYThis volume provides detailed Controlled Air Incineration (CAI) design and engineering information accumulated during several years of development at Los Alamos National Laboratory. This manual's purpose is to make that information available to other installations. The text is divided into sections by major systems: feed preparation, incinerator, offgas cleanup, scrub-solution recycling, ash removal and packaging, and instruments and controls.Under each system, drawing titles and numbers, specifications, sizing calculations,* and equipment costs are listed. Actual drawings for major parts of the design are reproduced in the Appendix. English units are used throughout.
