“…It should be noted that mental health care policies are an ongoing issue in Mexico, due to the fact that investment is rather scarce (Berenzon Gorn, Saavedra Solano, Medina-Mora Icaza, Aparicio Basaur ı, & Galv an Reyes, 2013). The more resources there are, the greater possibility for professional development there is and as pointed out by Heinze, del Carmen Chapa, & Carmona-Huerta (2016), there is a centralisation of psychiatrists in Mexico with 60.34% concentrating in the three states; the remaining 39.66% are distributed among the other 29 states. This contributes to the situation in which general practitioners, who tend to be the patient's first contact, are not likely to be skilled or trained in order to diagnose patients or to refer them to an adequate specialist in a timely manner (Vargas Terrez & Villamil Salcedo, 2016).…”

“…As for the rate of psychiatrists in Mexico, there are, on the one hand, the figures reported by the WHO, which probably reflect data on psychiatrists who are mainly affiliated to public sector hospitals (WHO, 2014). However, Heinze et al (Heinze et al, 2012;Heinze et al, 2016) expanded the knowledge about the total number of psychiatrists in both the public and private sectors. They added two significant findings worth highlighting: 1.…”

“…They added two significant findings worth highlighting: 1. Only 19.39% of the psychiatrists had a valid certification in 2016 (Heinze et al, 2016), and 2. 60.34% of all the psychiatrists are concentrated in three states: 42.09% in Mexico City, 11.22% in Jalisco, and 7.03% in Nuevo León (Heinze et al, 2016).…”

También se ha referido que la mayoría de estos especialistas no trabaja para las instituciones públicas, donde se atiende el 90% de la población.…”
