Losing our Senses, an Exploration of 3D Object Scanning

Abstract: 3D scanning and photogrammetry of archaeological objects are now becoming commonplace. Virtual 3D scans are in many cases replacing the drawn record and are leading to objects being more easily accessed, shared and analysed. However, the wholesale production of 3D virtual replicas of artefacts is not always supported by adequate information regarding the multi-sensory nature of artefacts. The visual and geometric aspects are well represented, but the sounds and smells of the artefacts are lost. This paper expl… Show more

“…Mixed Reality (MR) With exception to 3D printing, many of these datasets are still presented in a 2D format on a computer screen (Ebert et al 2014). The concept of mixed reality (MR) incorporates virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies (Eve 2018). Through VR a user is immersed in real-time in a virtual world via a computer interface, usually using VR goggles or a headset (Eve 2018;Fernandez-Palacios et al 2015).…”

“…However, we do not intend to refer to prosthetics that attempt to simulate isolated senses, such as the virtual cocoon (Chalmers & Zányi 2009), a virtual-reality helmet that stimulated senses by using devices that could generate sound, smell, taste, various temperatures and so on, or the Dead Man's Nose (Eve 2017a), a prototype that emits different smells according to the location of the user. Although some of these, and especially Eve's embodied GIS approach within a Mixed Reality framework (Eve 2017b; 2018), provide a basis for integrating sensorial flows into a dynamic whole, we believe that such approaches do not do justice to the complex processes of experience and perception, and as noted above, treat sensoriality as a matter of bodily organs and isolated interaction devoid of affectivity, within a model of exterior stimuli and interior cognitive processing (see Hamilakis 2013, 106–8, for a critique).…”
