Loss of consciousness and convulsion induced by a ventricular tachycardia mimicking epilepsy in a patient with noncompaction cardiomyopathy: a case report

Abstract: Convulsions and loss of consciousness can be caused by, among other things, arrhythmias, conduction disorders or epilepsy. In clinical practice it can be difficult to distinguish between these causes of syncope, even for well-trained specialists. Patients with cardiac syncope have a substantial risk of subsequent sudden death. We present a patient with previously unknown noncompaction cardiomyopathy in whom syncope induced by ventricular tachycardia was misinterpreted as epilepsy. We present this case report i… Show more

“…Convulsions mostly occur within 24 hours of fever. Complex febrile seizures tend to occur multiple times and last for a long time, and metabolism, oxygen consumption, and blood flow of nerve cells change during the seizure, resulting in central nervous system lesions and secondary epilepsy ( 14 ). The above studies support the present study, which also showed that family history of epilepsy, systemic seizures, number of seizures, and duration of seizures were independent risk factors for secondary epilepsy in children with complex febrile seizures (P<0.05).…”

“…При назначении бета-блокаторов и ингибиторов-АПФ приступы желудочковой тахикардии (ЖТ) стали бессимптомными, уменьшилось их количество и длительность. Для профилактики внезапной сердечной смерти пациенту имплантирован кардиовертер-дефибриллятор [25].…”

“…In the introduction the authors mention that the clinical presentation of noncompaction includes heart failure, thromboembolic events, or arrhythmias [ 6 ]. However, noncompaction patients may present with other cardiac manifestations, particularly if noncompaction is associated with functional or morphological abnormalities in addition to noncompaction (non-isolated noncompaction) [ 10 ].…”
