Lossy transmission of correlated sources over two-way channels

Abstract: Achievability and converse results for the lossy transmission of correlated sources over Shannon's two-way channels (TWCs) are presented. A joint source-channel coding theorem for independent sources and TWCs for which adaptation cannot enlarge the capacity region is also established. We further investigate the optimality of scalar coding for TWCs with discrete modulo additive noise as well as additive white Gaussian noise. Comparing the distortion of scalar coding with the derived bounds, we observe that scal… Show more

“…However, in our decoding scheme we do not attempt to explicitly cancel the effect of self-interference from the channel outputs since one cannot undo the effects of selfinterference in all TWCs such as the BM-TWC. Rather, we use the known self-interference, as shown in (9), to condition the decoding of channel outputs.…”

“…in [8] for systems where the two terminals exchange source data with the help of a relay when there is no direct link between the terminals. Achievability and converse results for the lossy transmission of correlated sources over TWCs were derived in [9]. In the same paper, the optimality of scalar coding for TWCs with discrete modulo additive noise as well as additive white Gaussian noise was investigated.…”

“…An achievability result for independent sources based on separate sourcechannel coding is thus obtained. (iii) SSCC for the lossy transmission of correlated sources [4]: Define V j X j , and let the joint distribution of (S 1 , S 2 , U 1 , U 2 , X 1 , X 2 ) be given by P S1,S2,U1,U2,X1,X2 = P S1,S2 · P V1 · P W1|S1…”

“…Nevertheless, this scheme does not apply to the lossy setup. In [4], a separate lossy source-channel coding (SSCC) scheme that decouples data compression and error correction was constructed. Here, the two users employ Wyner-Ziv (WZ) lossy coding [5] in tandem with standard (non-adaptive) channel coding.…”
