Low anterior resection syndrome: a survey of the members of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), the Spanish Association of Surgeons (AEC), and the Spanish Society of Coloproctology (AECP)

Abstract: The probability of patients suffering from LARS was underestimated despite reporting good knowledge of the syndrome. Validated methods for the assessment of LARS were rarely used. Deficient awareness regarding risk factors for LARS was documented. Knowledge of therapeutic options was also limited.

“…Consequently, patients may withhold full disclosure of symptoms to their clinician. It is likely that previous studies highlighting the disparity between patient and clinician views on the impact of LARS on QoL could be explained by patients minimizing or opting not to disclose symptoms to their clinical team. In order to facilitate recognition of LARS symptoms it is therefore imperative that patients are aware of the symptoms of LARS preoperatively and that treatment strategies are available.…”

“…There is limited evidence suggesting that the symptoms of LARS may be obviated by the formation of a neorectal reservoir or by side to side anastomosis . Despite the fact that LARS is a significant and not uncommon problem a recent survey of colorectal surgeons suggests that awareness of the syndrome, its risk factors and treatment options is low .…”

“…Transanal irrigation (TAI) is an effective therapy for some defaecatory disorders, including ARS , but its use is not widespread . Posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) has also been used as a therapy for faecal incontinence and constipation, but there are few data on its usefulness for the management of ARS .…”
