Low back pain in children and adolescents: a systematic review and meta-analysis evaluating the effectiveness of conservative interventions

Abstract: While exercise interventions appear to be promising to treat LBP in children and adolescents, there is a dearth of research data relevant to paediatric populations. Future studies conducted in children and adolescents with LBP should incorporate what has been learnt from adult LBP research and be of rigorous methodological quality.

“…The lack of clinical research pertinent to children and adolescents has been emphasized by multiple studies. [715252629] Emerging evidence shows that children, especially adolescents who report persistent pain, are at an increased risk of chronic pain as adults. [51923] Moreover, many musculoskeletal illnesses follow a long-term pattern of recurring exacerbations and remissions, with the most consistent predictor of a new episode being the experience of a previous episode.…”

“…While there is extensive research into musculoskeletal problems in adults, our current understanding of the epidemiology, burden and treatment of musculoskeletal problems in children and adolescents is much more limited [2, 3]. Surveys show that up to 50% of children and adolescents report musculoskeletal pain in any 1 month, and while many of these conditions are assumed to be self-limiting, as many as 50% of this population will experience chronic or recurrent pain [4, 5].…”
