Low Birth Weight, the Differentiating Risk Factor for Stunting among Preschool Children in India

Abstract: Background: The prevalence of low birth weight (LBW) is a major public health issue in India; however, the optimal growth pattern for such infants is not clear. The purpose of this study is to understand the causal association between LBW and stunting of preschool children in India. Methods: The National Family Health Survey-4 is a large cross-sectional survey based on a nationally representative sample of 699,686 women in the age group of 15–49 years and was conducted during 2015–2016 in India. “…Furthermore, very low birthweight (≤1500 g) is considered to continue to influence health during childhood, adolescence and adulthood. It was reported to be associated, for example, with higher risk of coronary heart disease, chronic kidney disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and hypertension (reviewed in [ 10 ]); gout development [ 11 ]; brain abnormalities [ 12 ]; stunting in preschool children [ 13 ] and low bone mineral density [ 14 ].…”

“…One significant issue is the percentage of adolescent girls who have begun childbearing, by age 19 years which has remained consistently high (above 50 percent). 13,14 Adolescent pregnancy is associated with a 50 percent increased risk of stillbirths and neonatal deaths, and an increased risk of low birth weight (which is very high in Bangladesh at 22.6 percent), 7 premature birth, asphyxia, and maternal mortality. 15 In addition, the risk of stunting is 36% higher among first-born children of girls under 18 years in South Asia and it has been found that early motherhood remains a key driver of malnutrition.…”
