Under the framework of sustainable development of the marine economy, much consideration has been given to various coastal states for the large marine ecosystem (LME) concept. The Yellow Sea LME (YSLME) is one of the most heavily exploited LMEs in the world, and its sustainable development has been heavily threatened by human activities, with negative impacts on the economies of bordering countries, such as China. With the aim of mitigating environmental threats by developing a low-carbon economy based on low pollution, low energy consumption and low emission, an index system for evaluating marine environmental carrying capacity (MECC) was established in this study based on the entropy method, and gray relation analysis (GRA) was carried out to assess the MECC of three main coastal cities (Qingdao, Yantai and Weihai) along the YSLME in China. The results verified the importance of the environmental carrying capacities (ECCs) of marine resources, marine economy and marine environmental governance for the sustainable development of the YSLME, and revealed paths for improving the MECC of the studied cities. Based on the results, suggestions for ecosystem-based management of a low-carbon economy were provided to help government departments to reasonably develop and utilize marine resources, protect the marine environment and implement sustainable development strategies.

A self-developed large-scale 3D platform with a maximal volume of 1695 L and pressure of 30 MPa was employed to investigate the production behavior of hydrate-bearing sediment using depressurization and thermal stimulation technology. Moreover, a novel method involving the joint development of hydrate-bearing sediments and shallow gas was first carried out based on the established apparatus. Experimental results show that the temperature in the reactor exhibits a decreasing trend as a whole with the continuous heat adsorption of hydrate dissociation due to slow heat transfer in the large-scale device. Heat transfer is the main factor controlling the gas production rate in the whole process of depressurization. The temperature of the reactor almost approaches the equilibrium point corresponding to the internal pressure, and the hydrate keeps dissociating near the phase equilibrium curve. Meanwhile, local overpressure is first observed during depressurization, indicating that dissociated gas from hydrate cannot be fully released while some are trapped in the deposits. In addition, thermal stimulation may not be applicable for field-scale marine natural gas hydrate development owing to the large heat loss in the pipelines and the low heat transfer in the sediments. Investigation of the joint development of hydrate-bearing deposits and shallow gas indicates that hydrate hardly dissociates initially at the large production rate of shallow gas and starts to decompose gradually with the decreased value, showing strong interlayer interaction between hydrate layers and shallow gas. Therefore, it is necessary to reasonably allocate the production rate of different reservoirs at different depths to achieve the most economical development during the coproduction of multigas. Compared with that in small-scale experiments, the production behavior in the large-scale experimental apparatus is closer to fieldscale development. Moreover, the first large-scale experimental investigation on the joint development of hydrate-bearing sediments and shallow gas provides novel insight for efficiently developing natural gas hydrate reservoirs.

Climate change forces policy-makers to undertake actions to reduce human impact on socio-environmental system. One of the directions is to shift into low-carbon economy, also by increasing the role of renewable energy sources (RES) in energy sector. Therefore, there is a need to support local stakeholders with a knowledge-based approaches in order to implement RES more effectively. There are some systems assessing natural potential for RES installations, however, legal regulations are not always making it possible everywhere. The aim of this research is to expand existing functions of the decision support system for hybrid RES by the feasibility assessment of selected locations due to legal regulations. The developed tool was applied and presented on the case of a selected Polish region. The RES potential is assessed based on the universal databases (Global Wind Atlas, Global Solar Atlas, CORINE Land Cover), however, it was customized to local legal regulations, which allows the solution to be more practical and helpful for implementation in a low-carbon economy. Promotion of decision support systems for RES planning may constitute effective solution to reach goals set in the European Green Deal.
