Low cost and compact directional coupler for ultrawideband applications

Abstract: A design of a compact size (35 × 15 mm2) 3‐dB coupler with ultrawideband (UWB) characteristic is demonstrated in this article. The proposed design is accomplished by forming two diamond‐shaped microstrip lines that are broadside coupled by a slot at the middle ground plane. The dimension of the design was initialized using a simple mathematical formula and optimized using the CST microwave studio simulator. The design coupler is fabricated and measured. It shows comparable results of the simulation and measure… Show more

“…Difference value of the dimension even with 0.1 mm dissimilarity will led to different performance as in this case, the S11 is shifted slightly to the left. Besides, recent literature review shows that air gap [22] and misalignment [23] problems gives big impact on the performances of the multilayer technology devices. Comparison between simulation and measurement results for the proposed square-shaped phase shifter with the step impedances in terms of (a) scattering parameter and (b) phase difference between output ports.…”

“…There are several reasons that may cause the manufactured coupler not performing well compared to the simulation result. Previous literature review had stated that the existence of air gap between two layers can cause a big impact on coupler's performance [11]. Glue is being used in the manufactured of the coupler to reduce the effect of air gap and misalignment.…”
