Low cost and thin metasurface for ultra wide band and wide angle polarization insensitive radar cross section reduction

Abstract: A planar low cost and thin metasurface is proposed to achieve ultra-wideband radar cross section (RCS) reduction with stable performance with respect to polarization and incident angles. This metasurface is composed of two different artificial magnetic conductor unit cells arranged in a chessboard like configuration. These unit cells have a Jerusalem cross pattern with different thicknesses, which results in wideband out-phase reflection and RCS reduction, consequently. The designed metasurface reduces RCS mor… Show more

“…The proposed structure is implemented on very thin and low cost commercially available FR-4 substrate placed on top of a ground plane with air gap. Based on the best author knowledge, the RCS reduction bandwidth of the proposed metasurface is significantly higher than the early published references such as 11,12 . In addition to this ultra wideband RCS reduction bandwidth, the proposed metasurface has very light weight which is due to using ultra thin FR-4 substrate with 0.25 mm thickness and air gap.…”

“…Using more than two AMC unit cells and special arrangements can be employed to enhance the RCS reduction bandwidth as discussed in 7–10 . Recently, authors proposed two and three layers AMC metasurface with 108% and 109% RCS reduction, respectively 11,12 .…”

“…The antenna phase gradient metasurface, consisting of H-shaped elements, is proposed to reduce backscattering. To control electromagnetic (EM) wave and backscattering, a multi-bit dielectric reflective metasurface is demonstrated [28][29][30][31][32][33].…”

“…Recently, metasurfaces have been proposed for RCS reduction (RCSR) as an effective solution. These metasurfaces can be categorised into two groups: Phase cancellation mechanism by using two different artificial magnetic conductors unit cells with 180 ± 37 degrees reflection phase differences [7][8][9][10][11], and polarisation conversion mechanism by using rotated counterparts polarisation conversion metasurfaces [12,13].…”
