Low-Cost Fabrication of High-Performance Fluorinated Polythiophene-Based Vis–NIR Electrochromic Devices toward Deformable Display and Camouflage

Abstract: Flexible electrochromic devices (FECDs) are extensively used in smart windows, deformable electronic displays, and wearable electronics. However, it remains very challenging to fabricate low-cost yet high-performance visible–near-infrared (vis–NIR) FECDs. In this work, we overcome this hurdle by developing a fluorinated polythiophene derivative with superior overall electrochromic performance and simple electropolymerization patterning. Fluorophenyl-modified polythiophene (band gap: 1.74 eV) can be readily syn… Show more

“…Additionally, the obvious redox potential shift of the polymer could be observed during the polymerization process of the monomer. The phenomenon results from the fact that the polymers possess increasing electrical resistance along with the growth rate of polymers, which has to be balanced by the additional applied potential [ 41 , 42 ].…”

“…It has been well established that the tuning of a material’s spectroscopic properties can be contingent on both its structure and composition in order to cover the entire visible spectrum [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ]. Functional materials can also be made mechanically compliant with non-rigid electrodes, which paves the way for bendable, stretchable, and twistable EC devices [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ]. They can be processed using a gamut of deposition techniques [ 22 , 23 , 24 ].…”

“…As previously mentioned, the effects on tuning the energy gap are mainly related to the individual molecules without consideration of intermolecular interaction. The intermolecular interaction, for instance, the molecular π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding and charge transfer could also have the influence on altering the band gap of the molecules in the solid states [ 71 , 72 , 73 , 74 , 75 ]. According to the above approaches, researchers have designed and organized NIR luminescent materials.…”
