Low-cost PWM speed controller for an electric mini-baja type vehicle

Abstract: This paperwork presents a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) speed controller for an electric mini-baja-type car. A battery-fed 1-kW three-phase induction motor provides the electric vehicle traction. The open-loop speed control is implemented with an equal voltage/frequency ratio, in order to maintain a constant amount of torque on all velocities. The PWM is implemented by a low-cost 8-bit microcontroller provided with optimized ROM charts for distinct speed value implementations, synchronized transition between di… Show more

“…A harmonic drive (HD) is compact coaxial gear mechanism characterized by high reduction ratios (up to 300:1), no backlash, and a few number of components, which makes it popular in robotics and automotive applications (De Lucena, Marcelino, & Grandinetti, 2007;Gervini, Gomes, & Da Rosa, 2003). A typical HD consists of three main coaxial components: a circular rigid spline, a flexible spline, and a wave generator (Figure 2).…”

“…Focusing the talk on the motor selection, the brushless DC (BLDC) motor is highly recommended for electric vehicle applications because of the fast response in achieving the maximum rotation per minute (rpm) with efficient energy usage [11]. There has been a lot of research done in the field of BLDC motor control [12]- [15]. The focus of this research is to reach a target rotation per minute (RPM) in the shortest time possible to save the battery [11] and to have smooth movement between the throttle and motor rotation [16].…”

“…Single-bit modulations such as Pulse Density Modulation (PDM) and Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) are extensively used in telecommunications and power systems while they are employed in a wide variety of applications such as audio amplifiers (Class-D amplifiers [1,2]), signal coding and transmission [3], electric motor controllers (i.e. electric cars) [4], drivers for lasers engravers, servomechanisms, switched-mode power supplies [5] and other.…”
