Low cost TWDM by wavelength-set division multiplexing

Abstract: After extensive comparison of candidate technologies, the Full Service Access Network (FSAN) Group in early 2012 made the decision to define Time/Wavelength Division Multiplexing (TWDM) as the primary solution for the next‐generation passive optical network (NG‐PON2). A minimum of four wavelengths are foreseen as providing a total capacity per feeder line of 40 Gbit/s downstream and 10 Gbit/s or more upstream. Conventional wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) lasers from core or metro networks are too expens… Show more

“…The ONU-Tx's ER is 9 dB. Under TWDM-operation [12][13][14], the ONU-Tx's can be thermally tuned to different wavelength channels. The OLT-Rx's (R3) comprise a preamplifier SOA (16 dB smallsignal gain, 7 dB noise figure, and −2 dBm saturation input power [−3 dB]), a 20 nm wide ASE filter, a wavelength-set (WS) filter, APDs, and a ParBERT for BER evaluation.…”

“…A research is adopted by Full Service Access Network (FSAN) Group to design a Next Generation Passive Optical Network (NG-PON2) system, which it can support a high bandwidth optical network systems to saturate and handle the current hungry for higher bandwidth. The aim is to deliver bandwidth of at minimum 40 Gbit/s downlink and 10 Gbit/s uplink [22]. A conducted research [23] adopting SCM-OCDMA by using simulations of a subcarrier multiplexing optical code-division multiple-access (SCM-OCDMA) system in conjunction with selective mode excitation of LP01 and LP02 modes in multimode fiber, have demonstrated the achieved delivery of data at 2.4 GHz for two users over optimized bandwidth and bit error rate (BER) of six channels.…”

“…A wavelength-set division multiplexing (WSDM) scheme was recently developed by Bell Labs as the preferred solution for cost reasons [18]. In this scheme, an ONU uses a DFB-LDbased Tx without a wavelength selection and with an on-chip heater for the wavelength tuning.…”
