On A p r i l 11, 1983 t h e former Grand Forks Energy Technology Center o f DOE became t h e U n i v e r s i t y o f N o r t h Dakota Energy Research Center.T h e f u n d i n g p r ov i d e d u n d e r t h e Cooperative Agreement was sufficient t o maintain t h e continuity o f t h e research program a t t h e Center; so that, except f o r minor changes in t a s k objectives o r schedules, -t h e program i n ' t h e F i r s t AnnualResearch Plan f o r t h e Cooperative Agreement i s a d i r e c t continuation of t h e on-site w o r k t h a t was ongoing u n d e r t h e Center's FY 1983 approved PTPA's.T h e transfer of t h e C e n t~r and i t s employee3 from redc~'al Lu U r~l v e r s l t y status was r e l a t i v e l y trouble-free.However, it d i d in\/nlvc a great; deal o f exrra w o r k ' f o r several months before and a f t e r t h e event. It also involved t h e establishment o f a new organizational s t r u c t u r e which created new r esponsibilities f o r many employees. As a result, it was decided n o t t o w r i t e t h e normal q u a r t e r l y r e p o r t f o r t h e period January-March 1983; t h e e x t r a e f f o r t r e q u i r e d would have been too great.Instead, it was decided t o incorporate i n t o t h i s q u a r t e r l y r e p o r t all significant accomplishments and f i n d i n g s from t h e w o r k done a t t h e Center during i t s last q u a r t e r as a Federal institution.Thus, t h e w o r k reported in t h i s volume actually represents t h e period January t h r o u g h June, 1983. Gasification Wastewater Treatment & Reuse . 0 . . Two of t h e most successful, gasifier. runs; w i t h durations o f 169 a n d 118 hours of slagging operation, were concluded v o l u n t a r i l y when all of t h e lignite o n site was consumed. ' Enough wastewater, nominally 23,000 gal, was generated from-these tests t o s u p p o r t a , 50-day t e s t in t h e cooling tower simulation unit. ' Wastewater was processed by solvent.extraction and steam s t r i p p i n g t o concentrations o f about 150 mg/l phenol and 600 mg/l ammonia ( t h e reported design values f o r ' t h e Great Plains Gasification.
