Low Resighting Rate of Entangled Humpback Whales Within the California, Oregon, and Washington Region Based on Photo-Identification and Long-Term Life History Data

Abstract: Bycatch, commonly referred to as entanglement, is a leading source of human-caused mortality of baleen whales. A better understanding of the individuals that survive (or perish from) their entanglement can help reduce the risk of bycatch by informing gear modifications and fisheries management. However, determining survival rates is restricted by the ability to track individuals once they become entangled. Historically, the effort to identify and resight individuals from known entanglement cases was low along … Show more

“…Además, son varios los ejemplos de éxito que demuestran que es posible reducir los enmallamientos manteniendo la viabilidad de la pesca (Read et al, 2006). El país no cuenta con personal con experiencia en atención de cetáceos enmallados, y por adoptar en las artes pesqueras y en la gestión de la peca (Tackaberry et al, 2022).…”

For research collaborators, this has inspired studies that would not have been possible without the large collective investment in building a platform and populating it with a comprehensive and contemporary dataset 48,49 . To date the NPPID collaboration has contributed data to seven other peer reviewed papers 17,26,27,[50][51][52][53] .…”

“…The NPPID dataset has been successfully applied in this context, contributing to challenging management issues such as, for example, the US West Coast Dungeness crab shery. Here, researchers can readily determine the proportion of whales in the endangered Central American DPS 49,[59][60][61] . The NPPID collaboration began with a MOA, offering co-authorship to contributors in a series of manuscripts investigating humpback whale migratory patterns and population status in the North Paci c. Collaborators wishing to address additional research questions must seek permission from all relevant data contributors.…”
