Low Temperature In Situ Synthesis of ZnO Nanoparticles from Electric Arc Furnace Dust (EAFD) Waste to Impart Antibacterial Properties on Natural Dye-Colored Batik Fabrics

Abstract: Natural polymer (cellulose)-based fabric was colored using an environmentally friendly natural dye extracted from Jalawe (Terminalia bellirica) in the preparation of Batik fabric, a cultural heritage of Indonesia that is recognized by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Despite the significant favorable properties in terms of functions, environmental, and cultural aspects, the combination between natural polymer-based fabric and natural dyes makes the Batik fabric an idea… Show more

“…Electric-arc furnace dust (EAFD) is an unwanted byproduct substance produced by the electric-arc furnace (EAF) method during the steelmaking process [2,[7][8][9][10][11] at an average of 1% to 2% of the overall output of steel [2,[11][12][13]. Many of the elements included in iron scraps, such as Zn, Fe, Cr, Mn, and Pb, can be volatile at temperatures as high as 1600 • C during the process of melting.…”
