Low‐Temperature Oxidation of Catocene and Its Influence on the Mechanical Sensitivities of a Fine‐AP/Catocene Mixture

Abstract: High burning‐rate composite solid propellants with fine ammonium perchlorate (fine‐AP) and catocene have high mechanical sensitivities. The products of fine‐AP and catocene mixtures after low‐temperature exothermic reactions at about 173 °C were analyzed by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The result showed that FeO, Fe2O3, or FeClx were generated during the oxidation of catocene in the fine‐AP/catocene mixture. The mixture of fine‐AP and catocene has high impact and friction sensitivities, whereas the … Show more

“…In this Article, we report the synthesis of several heterobimetallic complexes containing manganese and one of the following metals: Fe, Ru, Co, or Ni. The different oxidation potentials of heterobimetallic compounds and the existing cooperative effects can have a combined influence on the catalytic performance over the AP’s thermal decomposition compared with ferrocene (Fc) and catocene (Cat). , …”

“…Most researchers believe that Catocene will be oxidized to nano-sized Fe 2 O 3 when temperature rise, and the nanosized Fe 2 O 3 is the main effective constituent of catalysis for thermal decomposition of AP [4]. In our earlier study [5], the low-temperature oxidation of Catocene was found a significant effect on mechanical sensitivity of AP/Catocene mixture. But the details of the Catocene oxidation have been seldom investigated so far, and the mechanism of the reaction is still uncertain.…”

“…According to our earlier study [5], the mixture of AP/Catocene (Particle A, the mass ratio of the mixture is 90 : 10 wt %) was prepared by solvent-nonsolvent method. After 1758C for 2 h heat treatment, the original yellow Particle A changed into black Particle B.…”

“…However, the contradiction between high energy and low sensitivity is the eternal theme for energetic materials [6]. Although the burning performance can be visibly improved as the ultra-fine ammonium perchlorate (UF-AP, commonly < 5 mm) is largely adopted to replace the AP in normal size (> 100 mm) [5], the mechanical sensitivity will also be increased, especially for the friction sensitivity of propellant charge containing catocene as the catalyst [7].…”
