Low-Temperature Requirements for Bitumen in Central East European Road Construction

Abstract: The paper presents the proposition of special assessment of lowtemperature requirements for bitumens in the region of Central and Eastern Europe where there is a moderate transitional area from sea to the continental type of climate. The results of the research program conducted on the road neat bitumens, Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene polymer and polymer-rubber modified bitumen, and multigrade bitumen types were presented and discussed. Based on the Superior Performing Asphalt Pavements Performance Grade procedure… Show more

“…In the road-building process, rubber and oily sludge can be used as an asphalt binder mixture. Since this mixture can withstand low temperatures of −28 °C, so the asphalt surface layer does not crack [41]. Another advantage of this material is reducing energy consumption to obtain asphalt mix for road paving [42].…”

“…Highly modified asphalts have above-standard characteristics, such as: very good resistance to rutting [3], resistance to water and frost, resistance to cracking under low temperatures [4], high fatigue strength [5,6,7]. These asphalts are dedicated in particular for surfaces characterized by increased traffic loads, substructures of high fatigue strength and asphalt layers characterized by high resistance to low temperatures.…”

“…Similar problems of inconsistency between the brittleness temperature of the produced bitumen and winter climatic temperatures exist in different countries of the world. For example, in recent years due to the deterioration of the climate, in some regions of Eastern Europe, extreme low temperatures up to −40° C have been recorded [4].…”
