Lower and middle Jurassic woods of the Cleveland Basin (North Yorkshire), England

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Allochthonous Lower and Middle Jurassic (Pliensbachian-Bathonian) permineralized and charcoalified woods from the Cleveland Basin (North Yorkshire, England) are assigned to five genera of gymnospermous wood (Cupressinoxylon spp., Taxodioxylon spp., Cedroxylon spp., Xenoxylon and Araucarioxylon) and two species (Xenoxylon phyllocladoides and Araucarioxylon lindlei). Cell structure is commonly well preserved, particularly in calcified and charcoalified samples, and several features of the growth rings … Show more

“…Perhaps there were more ìyater bodies in the Saltwick environment or flooding events were more persistent. This might also be consistent with the upward trend for increased aridity recognized by Morgans (1999) and Morgans et al (1999). Curiously, traces that can confidently be linked to the activity of flsh are almost entirely absent ftom the Ravenscar Group and the only possible example of the sinuous trace Undichno Ìvas noticed in a mudrock ftom thc Gristhorpe Member (Fig.…”

“…The general lack of coals ìvithin the non-ma ne units of the Rayenscar Group, together with a consideration of the sedimentology, fossil floras, growth ring analysis and presence of charcoal, has led Morgans (1999) and Morgans et al (1999) to suggost that the region was charactedzed by climatic seasonality and, during late Bajocian-Bathonian times, by a 'greater aridity' than during the Pliensbachian-mid Bajocian.…”

“…Mediterranean-like climate, characterised by mild, wet winters and dry summers by the early Bathonian, with a subsequent trend towards increasing aridity (Morgans, 1999, Morgans et al, 1999. These conditions were within the context of a global greenhouse with weakly defined climatic zones (Frakes et al, 1992;Sellwood and Valdes, 1997;Poulsen and Riding, 2003;Brigaud et al, 2008).…”

“…In the past growth rings in fossil coniferopsid woods have been successfully utilised to analyse palaeoclimate (e.g. Creber and Chaloner 1984;Morgans 1999). However, recent quantitative research has strongly suggested that in addition to palaeoclimatic in¯uence, the style of growth rings in conifer woods may also be closely linked to the leaf longevity of the tree (Falcon-Lang 2000).…”
