Lower hybrid resonances stimulated by the four CLUSTER relaxation sounders deep inside the plasmasphere: observations and inferred plasma characteristics

Abstract: Abstract. The frequency range of the WHISPER relaxation sounder instrument on board CLUSTER, 4-80 kHz, has been chosen so as to encompass the electron gyro-frequency, F ce , and the electron plasma frequency, F p , in most regions to be explored. Measurement of those frequencies, which are triggered as resonances by the sounder, provides a direct estimation of in situ fundamental plasma characteristics: electron density and magnetic field intensity. In the late mission phase, CLUSTER penetrated regions deep in… Show more

“…We analyze the frequency spectra obtained during the passive and active (sounding) operation modes. Several methods can be used to determine F p , for example, the local wave cutoff properties [ Canu et al ., ], the observation of Bernstein modes [ Trotignon et al ., ], or the use of lower hybrid resonances [ Kougblénou and Lointier , ]. This analysis carries out a direct or indirect determination of N e related to F p by the relation Necm3=FpkHz2/81…”

“…Note that local wave cut-off properties can also be used to determine F pe . We can further mention the lower hybrid frequency, F lh , observed since 2009 at altitudes below ∼ 4000 km (Kougblénou et al, 2011).…”

“…The spacecraft do not enter and leave the plasmasphere at similar MLT values but sweep a significant range of MLT values. Moreover, the latitudinal range explored during the crossing is smaller than at the start of the mission (see also Kougblénou et al, 2011, for a discussion about the Cluster orbit evolution). As the perigee geocentric distance decreases (from 4.2 R E at launch time to 1.5 R E in 2010), similar Z-values of perigee lead to higher latitudes www.ann-geophys.net/31/217/2013/ Ann.…”

“…Several methods can be used to determine the electron plasma frequency F pe from the data recorded by the WHISPER instrument: the identification of local wave cut-off properties (Canu et al 2001), the observation of Bernstein modes (Trotignon et al 2003) or the use of lower hybrid resonances (Kougblénou et al 2011). This analysis carries out a direct or indirect determination of the electron density N e related to F pe by the simple relation:…”
