“…Curcuminoids are the main polyphenol constituents of turmeric (Curcuma longa) and have 3 chemical components, including curcumin (75-80%), demethoxycurcumin (15-20%), and bisdemethoxycurcumin (3-5%). Epidemiologic data suggest that dietary curcumin intake is positively related to cognitive function in healthy elderly individuals (47), with evidence that concentrations of Ab and tau are lower in populations that consume large amounts of curcumin (48,49). To our knowledge, there are 7 clinical investigations of the safety, tolerance, pharmacokinetics, and treatment effects of curcumin in AD (NIH registry) (Table 1), although observations from 4 of these are still pending.…”

“…In spite of the genetic differences, there is also a difference in the pathology of AD in India, with a decrease in β-amyloid 1–42 in both normal controls and those patients who do develop AD, as well as a decrease in hyperphosphorylated tau. 82 , 83 It has been postulated that the reduced incidence or severity of AD in India might, beyond genetics, reflect differences in diet or environment. 74 Indeed, people in India consume large amounts of curcumin, about 80–200 mg/day, 84 which has long been known to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.…”

“…In order to establish the reference range in our laboratory set up, we have earlier analyzed CSF samples collected from non-demented individuals between 20 and 65 years of age. Measurement of Aß42 levels from these controls displayed a wide distribution ranging from 150 pg/ml to 850 pg/ml with an average Aß42 level of 493 AE 27.1 pg/ml (Subramanian et al, 2006) which has been used as the normative data for the present study.…”
