Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms in Men With Parkinson Disease

Abstract: Assessment for LUTS should be a component of every evaluation of a patient with PD. Our findings offer a preliminary profile of the male PD patient with LUTS, which is an important step toward effective screening, detection, and access to care and treatment. Next steps in research include further work to identify predictors of LUTS in both male and female PD populations, explore patient perspectives, begin trials of interventions for LUTS in the PD population, and analyze the economic impact.

“…These results converge with studies that show that, among the non-motor symptoms, constipation and urinary bladder changes are the most present, affecting 70-80% and 38-71% of patients, respectively (14)(15) . In the present study, we can observe the reversal of the prevalence of these symptoms, which makes it important to consider the peculiarities that make up the population.…”

Additionally, It is among the most common sleep complaints in this patient population[102,111,229], and is a key factor in sleep maintenance insomnia.…”

“…The nursing interventions related to intestinal disorders, which in this study were representatively described, lead to research showing that among the non-motors symptoms of PD, bowel constipation is the most prevalent. This alteration is present in 70-80% of these individuals, and is mainly related to neuronal degeneration occurring in the vagal center of bowel control, and which may be present at any stage of neurodegeneration 16 . In this scenario, nurses action aim to intervene to restore bowel function of patients with non-pharmacological measures that minimize neurological damage, due to the degenerative process.…”
