LPS levels in root canals after the use of ozone gas and high frequency electrical pulses

Abstract: The present study aims to verify the effect of ozone gas (OZY ® System) and high frequency electric pulse (Endox ® System) systems on human root canals previously contaminated with Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Fifty single-rooted teeth had their dental crowns removed and root lengths standardized to 16 mm. The root canals were prepared up to #60 hand K-files and sterilized using gamma radiation with cobalt 60. The specimens were divided into the following five groups (n = 10) based on the disinfe… Show more

“…Ozone in the gas form is effective in disinfection acting against endodontic pathogens (PAIXÃO et al, 2021;SEN;SEN, 2020). On the other hand, an in vitro study was carried out to evaluate the effect of ozone gas for the elimination of endotoxins in the root canal, conducted by Melo et al (2016), it was concluded that there was no reduction in bacteria levels and aqueous ozone did not neutralize endotoxins. According to the authors, O³ damages the microbial coating structure, and the cytotoxin does not have this coating, being structured mainly by polysaccharides, in addition to this, the half-life of the ozone gas.…”

“…The success of endodontic treatment is directly related to the cleaning, elimination of microorganisms and their by-products, present in root canals for tissue repair of periapical lesion, if any. For this result, it is necessary to use appropriate instruments, combined with chemicals with antimicrobial properties (MELO et al, 2016;NOGALES et al, 2016;MEHTA et al, 2020).…”

“…Root canal therapy is a debridement procedure that is based on the removal of the irritants (bacteria) and inactivation of endotoxins and other toxic products from the canal and periapical areas to get a successful treatment [6], [7]. Root canal treatment depended on chemical and mechanical ways [6].…”
