“…While until now 17,20b-P has been shown to be involved in sperm function in teleosts (Baynes and Scott, 1985;Miura et al, 1991bMiura et al, , 1992, for those species in which this hormone is lacking a similar role may be taken by 17,20b,21-P (Thomas et al, 1997) or 17,20a-P (Vermeirssen et al, 2000). However, in Lusitanian toadfish 17,20b,21-P stays elevated for a long period and follows the pattern of swimbladder hypertrophy.…”

“…In some teleosts such as japanese eel, Anguilla japonica Temminck et Schlegel, 1846, rainbow trout and Chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta (Walbaum, 1792), it is suggested that 17α,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) is related to the regulation of sperm maturation in SF (Miura et al 1991a, b;1992). In this regard, the DHP indirectly mediate the increasing of seminal plasma pH, which in turn increases the sperm content of cAMP, thereby allowing the acquisition of potential of motility (Miura et al 1991a(Miura et al , 1992(Miura et al , 1995. In Persian sturgeon and stellate (Bayunova et al 2006), the BS levels of DHP did not show significant change both in mature and non-mature males.…”

“…Progestins regulate oocyte maturation (8) by binding to an oocyte plasma membrane receptor, inhibiting oocyte adenylate cyclase, followed by reduced cAMP-dependent protein kinase activity, which induces the activation of maturation promoting factor via Cdc25, eventually triggering the resumption of division I of meiosis (7,8). In fish spermatogenesis, progestin also plays an important role in spermiation and sperm maturation (9)(10)(11). A major progestin in teleost fish, 17␣,20␤-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP), induces sperm hydration (9) and acquisition of sperm motility in some species (10,11).…”
