Nepal’s National Red List of Birds

Abstract: The main objectives of the Nepal National Bird Red Data Book were to provide comprehensive and up-to-date accounts of all the bird species found in Nepal, assess their status applying the IUCN Guidelines at Regional Levels, identify threats to all bird species and recommend the most practical measures for their conservation. It is hoped that the Bird RDB will help Nepal achieve the Convention on Biological Diversity target of preventing the extinction of known threatened species and improving their conservati… Show more

“…However, additional 2 species (Table 5) are recognized as threaten species under national status. Inskipp et al, 2017) All 3 species shared vulnerable threatened status (Table 5). These 42 individuals of nationally threatened species population account for 3.49% of total population in the study area.…”

“…There have been very few observations of the species in the other localities in Nepal (Inskipp et al 2016). Given its restricted wintering habitats, continuing habitat loss and observed declining population since 2007 it has been classified as Endangered in the Nepal bird Red Data Book (Inskipp et al 2016(Inskipp et al , 2017. The species has also been recommended to the Government of Nepal to be listed as a protected species under the National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act (Baral 1998;Inskipp et al 2016).…”

“…The contribution from international ornithologists such as Carol and Tim Inskipp nurtured modern-day ornithology in Nepal by publishing and advocating avian research and conservation. More recently, the publication of the first comprehensive avian database of Nepal (Inskipp et al 2016 ) is considered a key resource for conducting avian research in Nepal. The Government of Nepal has also endorsed action plans for species such as vultures (DNPWC 2015 ), Bengal Florican (DNPWC 2016 ), pheasants (DNPWC and DFSC 2018 ), and owls (DNPWC and DFSC 2020 ) showing commitment for long term conservation of avian species.…”

“…A similar pattern is observed for avian fauna in Nepal; lowland regions of Nepal harbors a higher number of species while high mountains are species-poor (Baral and Inskipp 2020 ). About > 550 resident avian species undergo altitudinal migration (Inskipp et al 2016 ), e.g. White-tailed Rubythroat ( Luscinia pectoralis ) and West Himalayan Bush Warbler ( Locustella kashmirensis ), which breed in the high Himalayas but migrate to lower altitude in winter (Baral and Inskipp 2020 ).…”
