Reassessment of the suitable range of water pH for culture of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus L. in eutrophic water

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The present work aimed at reassessing the suitable range of water pH for culture of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus L. juveniles in eutrophic water. Two hundred and forty tilapia juveniles (1.37 ± 0.04 g) were stocked in twenty 250-L polyethylene tanks (12 fish per tank) for eight weeks. In the control tanks, the pH of water was not adjusted at any time, varying freely over the entire study. In the slight acidification treatment, the culture water was acidified daily to reach a water pH between 5… Show more

“…The pH during the study period ranged from 7.27 to 8.18. However, the pH of all the treatments was found to be in the optimum range for tilapia rearing (5.5–9.0) as reported by Rebouças et al (2016).…”

“…Similar to DO, pH also remained within the recommended pH value for aquaculture i.e., 6.5–9.0 ( Boyd et al, 1978 ) and suitable range for tilapia i.e. 5.5–9.0 ( Rebouças et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Still, a recent study has shown a decrease of the total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) in a marine species ( Scophthalmus maximus ) transported for 6 h under the same MS-222 concentration [ 68 ]. In addition, the optimal water pH for the culture of this species varies between 5.5 and 9.0 [ 69 , 70 ] and the small variations observed might have no direct influence on the welfare of the animals. The hematocrit was decreased by the anesthetics after the end of the transportation, which could be an indicator of a decreased oxygen-binding capacity, associated with changes in pH [ 71 , 72 ].…”
