Shewanella putrefaciens Isolated in a Case of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia

Abstract: We report the isolation of the aquatic gram-negative bacterium Shewanella putrefaciens from the bronchoalveolar lavage in a case of ventilator-associated pneumonia. To our knowledge, this species has never been isolated from the lower respiratory tract before as a potential pathogen.

“…An outbreak of 31 abdominal and biliary tract infections, or bacteremia, caused by exposure to a shared measuring cup was reported in a general surgery unit in South Korea. 8 Other infections in this group were two cases of ventilatorassociated pneumonia, 45,54 five cases of peritonitis in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis, 26,27,31 eight cases of skin and soft tissue infections, 24,31 one case of keratitis, 49 one case of bacteremia caused by endoscopic therapy of gastric varices, 31 one case of meningitis after trepanation, 21 and one case of urinary tract infection associated with catheterization. Most (87%, 195 of 223) patients recovered, although some cases of ear infection became chronic.…”

“…Shewanella species are marine bacteria but have been reported as rare human pathogens (Holt et al, 2005). The most common Shewanella species associated with human infections are S. algae and S. putrefaciens (Holt et al, 2005), both of which have been identified as the cause of a variety of infections such as bacteraemia, pneumonia, meningitis and soft tissue infection (Brink et al, 1995;Jorens et al, 2004;Pagani et al, 2003;Tucker et al, 2010;Yilmaz et al, 2007). However, the species identification of previous reports was generally performed using biochemical reactions or commercially supplied automated microbiology systems.…”

“…This has raised the possibility that shewanellae could serve as decontaminating agents in the environment (2,18,19,24). Also, these bacteria can cause food spoilage and can act as opportunistic pathogens (3,12) and thus are of some interest to the food industry and medicine.…”
