Characterization of Hubera (Annonaceae), a new genus segregated from Polyalthia and allied to Miliusa

Abstract: On the basis of molecular phylogenetics, pollen morphology and macromorphology, a new genus of the tribe Miliuseae, Hubera, segregrated from Polyalthia and allied to Miliusa, is established and described. It is characterized by the combination of reticulate tertiary venation of the leaves, axillary inflorescences, a single ovule per ovary and therefore single-seeded monocarps, seeds with a flat to slightly raised raphe, spiniform(-flattened peg) ruminations of the endosperm, and pollen with a finely and densel… Show more

“…After a false start with the name Hubera (Chaowasku et al 2012), some 27 species ranging from East Africa and Madagascar to the South Pacific were transferred to Huberantha (Chaowasku et al 2015), to be followed by one more from India (Muralidharan et al 2015) and 4 from Vietnam, the Philippines and New Guinea (Turner 2016). However, the taxonomy of genus is poorly known, particularly in New Guinea and the Pacific.…”

“…All methods of DNA extraction, amplification, and sequencing performed in Chaowasku et al (2012) were used in the present study. Due to a poor quality of the extracted DNA or unavailability of leaf material, we could not produce seven markers for all accessions (see Appendix, Table 1).…”

“…Sequences were edited using the program Staden version 1.7.0 (http://staden.sourceforge.net/) and subsequently manually aligned. Some sequences were obtained from previous studies (Mols et al 2004a(Mols et al , 2004bPirie et al 2006;Chaowasku et al 2012). Maximum parsimony analyses were performed in TNT version 1.1 (Goloboff et al 2008).…”

“…The genus Hubera Chaowasku in Chaowasku et al (2012) was established in accordance with strict monophyly based on a molecular phylogenetic analysis and morphological characters; the component species were previously considered members of the polyphyletic genus Polyalthia Blume s.l. (1830 : 68).…”
