Quararibea bragae (Malvaceae; Malvoideae): a new species with multiple domatia from Brazil

Abstract: Quararibea bragae from the Atlantic Forest of Espírito Santo State (Brazil) is proposed as a new species. Quararibea bragae is similar to Q. turbinata in vegetative characteristics, such as the shape and consistency of its leaves and type of domatia. However, it can be distinguished by the leaves’ indumentum and by the positioning and quantity of domatia on the abaxial surface of the leaves. Reproductive characteristics are differentiated by the shape and indumentum of the staminal tube and the shape of the fr… Show more

“…We used leaf samples taken from the specimen C. D. M. Ferreira et al 533 (RB) to analyze the domatia microscopically, following the method of Ferreira et al (2018) and Ferreira and Bovini (2020). Samples were fixed with carbon adhesive tape on stubs, coated with a thin gold layer of approximately 20 nm, and observed under a scanning electron microscope at a voltage of 15 kV.…”

“…Quararibea Aublet is restricted to the Neotropics and occurs from Mexico to tropical South America where it is represented by approximately 60 species (Pittier 1945, Alverson 1986, Fernández-Alonso 1999, 2001a, b, 2002, 2022, Zamora et al 2017, Cascante-Marín et al 2018, Ferreira et al 2018, Ferreira and Bovini 2020. These species are small trees, usually approximately 2 m tall, occasionally reaching 35 m, usually with verticillate and plagiotropic branches, and simple and alternate leaves.…”

“…In Brazil, there are eleven species recorded in northern, northeastern, midwestern, and southeastern regions of the country (Flora do Brasil 2020; Ferreira et al 2018). According to Ferreira & Bovini (2020), there are five Quararibea species in the southeastern Brazilian Atlantic Forest: Q. angustifolia (Martius 1839: 17) C.D.M. Ferreira & Bovini (2018: 1013, Q. bragae C.D.M.…”
