The Patient-Reported Experience Measure for Improving qUality of care in Mental health (PREMIUM) project in France: study protocol for the development and implementation strategy

Abstract: BackgroundMeasuring the quality and performance of health care is a major challenge in improving the efficiency of a health system. Patient experience is one important measure of the quality of health care, and the use of patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) is recommended. The aims of this project are 1) to develop item banks of PREMs that assess the quality of health care for adult patients with psychiatric disorders (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression) and to validate computerized adapt… Show more

“…The synthesis of these aggregations is presented in Table 4 . The final conceptual framework included seven themes that were approved by consensus within the research team (including public health experts, psychiatrists and psychologists [ 39 ]): interpersonal relationships (discussed by 100% of interviewees), care environment (95%), drug therapy (92%), access and care coordination (89%), respect and dignity (43%), information (41%), and psychological care (16%). Interpersonal relationships encompassed three subthemes: patient-staff relationships (89%), relations with other patients (68%) and involvement of family and friends (27%).…”

“…Some dimensions of the patient experience are common concerns for all patients (eg, information and respect for patient preferences [ 37 , 38 ], however, psychiatric patients have more specific needs that need to be addressed (eg, drug treatment and psychological care). In this context, the Patient-Reported Experience Measure for Improving qUality of care in Mental health (PREMIUM) Group intends to develop a set of PREMs to assess the quality of mental health care for adult patients with SMIs based on modern testing methods, including item banks and computerized adaptive testing (CAT) [ 39 ].…”

“…PREMs play an important role in evaluating the experience of patients to an intervention that leads to the evaluation of patients' satisfaction and is useful for research, quality improvement projects, clinician performance evaluation, audit, and economic evaluation [1,11]. In recent years, generic-and intervention-specific PREMs have been developed and used in different areas of clinical medicine and surgical practice, stressing the relevance of patient satisfaction to a patientcentred approach in modern medicine [1,3,4,11]. Wellestablished surgical PREMs have already been developed for specific surgical interventions, like hernia repair or hip replacement and these have been approved for use in the UK and worldwide [2].…”

“…Patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) are increasingly used to assess the effectiveness of clinical care on a particular patient population ( [1][2][3][4]11]. In neurosurgery, studies to evaluate patients' experience and satisfaction have been performed, for example, in patients undergoing awake craniotomy [10,18,30].…”

“…Since the aim of the study was to measure subjective colonoscopy experience and no Swedish questionnaire was available, a study specific questionnaire was developed inspired by the development of patient reported experience measures (PREM) [21]. The procedure was followed by 4 steps: (1) a literature search was performed to inventory questionnaires measuring colonoscopy experience in other European countries; (2) an item bank relevant to the Swedish context was gathered; (3) a qualitative study with focus group discussions and telephone interviews with the overall aim to investigate CRC screening experience were performed [11], results from the question 'How did you experience the screening method' (not published) generated items and were added to the questionnaire; (4) the questionnaire was reviewed by professional expertise (three of the authors, KF, AF, RH, have extensive knowledge in endoscopy). The final questionnaire consisted of 10 questions (Q1-10, Table 1).…”
