Transcranial magnetic stimulation for the treatment of anxiety disorder

Abstract: Anxiety is currently one of the main mood changes and can impair the quality of life of the individual when associated with other neurological or psychiatric disorders. Neuromodulation has been highlighted as a form of treatment of several pathologies, including those involving anxiety symptoms. Among the neuromodulatory options with the potential to improve mood changes, we highlight repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). rTMS is a viable therapeutical option for neuropsychiatric dysfunctions of… Show more

“…The active treatment groups of both techniques showed better results compared to the placebo group in relation to anxiety state (STAI-S) and maintaining this improvement in the medium-term (30-day follow-up). Although, anxiety associated with other neurological disorders 53 such as BPI associated with chronic pain 11 can negatively impact the quality of life, we do not obtained improvement in SF-36 scores. Indeed, the expected maintenance of physical disability throughout the course of treatment with NIBS techniques 43 probably contributed to not improving the quality of life.…”

“…1) and since 2018 for obsessivecompulsive disorder (Carmi et al 2019;Carmi et al 2018;Berlim et al 2013b). In addition, it has been shown to have potential benefits in multiple other conditions, including anxiety (Rodrigues et al 2019;Cirillo et al 2019), posttraumatic stress disorder (Kozel et al 2018;Watts et al 2012;Karsen et al 2014;Ahmadizadeh and Rezaei 2018), and fibromyalgia (Boyer et al 2014;Passard et al 2007;Mhalla et al 2011).…”

“…Some current evidence suggests that right-sided LF-rTMS or bilateral rTMS may be effective to improve both depressive and anxiety symptoms in MDD with comorbid anxiety disorders. According to a literature review, rTMS studies for treating anxiety disorders were few, and LF-rTMS (1 Hz) of the right DLPFC has been considered as a treatment option for the treatment of anxiety disorders [23]. Previous neurophysiological and imaging studies suggest that increased right DLPFC activity may be related to an increase in anxiety [24].…”
