Checklist of Hawaiian Anthocerotes and Hepatics

Abstract: A literature-based checklist of Hawaiian hepatics and anthocerotes is presented. Geographic coverage includes the eight main Hawaiian Islands; the northwestern Hawaiian Islands are excluded. The checklist is alphabetically ordered by scientific names; the family is noted for each genus. Synonyms and misapplied names are cross-referenced to the accepted names. A bibliography of supporting references is included.

“…In the western Mediterranean, Corsica and Sardinia, which harbour nearly 10% species endemism in angiosperms, a single endemic bryophyte species has been described (Sotiaux et al, 2009). Even in Hawaii, one of the world's richest hot-spots of endemism, 29.4% and 48.6% of the moss and liverwort species, respectively, are endemic to the archipelago (Staples et al, 2004;Staples & Imada, 2006), whereas the rate of species endemism in angiosperms reaches 90% (Sakai, Wagner & Mehroff, 2002).…”

“…Among bryophytes, two genera (1%) and 178 species are listed as endemic (Staples et al . 2004; Staples & Imada 2006). Of the 880 lichens (Smith 2013), up to 30% are considered endemic (Eldredge & Miller 1995).…”

“…While estimates of endemism reach 80% for vascular plants (Wagner et al 1999;Wagner & Herbst 2002;Evenhuis & Eldredge 2002a, b), they are substantially lower for cryptogams. Among bryophytes, two genera (1%) and 178 species are listed as endemic (Staples et al 2004;Staples & Imada 2006). Of the 880 lichens (Smith 2013), up to 30% are considered endemic (Eldredge & Miller 1995).…”

“…Endemic bryophyte distribution for oceanic archipelagos illustrating, in each case, the number of endemic species in percentage (numbers of species indicated on the bars) having a distribution spanning a given number of islands. The volcanic archipelagos considered are the Azores (number of islands = 9; Gabriel et al ., ), Canaries (7; Losada‐Lima et al ., ), Hawaii (7; Staples et al ., ; Staples & Imada, ) and Galápagos (6; Gradstein & Weber, ). Other complementary sources of information were considered (J. Patiño et al ., in prep.).…”
