Cantharellus macrocarpus (Cantharellaceae, Cantharellales), a new species from tropical China

Abstract: Cantharellus macrocarpus, a member of Cantharellus subgenus Cantharellus, is described as a new species from Hainan Province, China. It is characterized by large basidioma with a bright yellow-orange pileus and a well-developed, rugulose hymenophore, cream to pale yellowish stipe, noticeably thickened hyphal walls in the pileipellis, presence of clamp connections in all parts of the basidiomata, and a distribution in tropical Asia. A phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences from part of the 28S gene and the tran… Show more

“…In China, although several taxa of subg. Cantharellus have been described or reported in previous studies (Chiu, 1973;Shao et al, 2011Shao et al, , 2016bShao et al, , 2021An et al, 2017;Cao et al, 2021;Zhang Y. Z. et al, 2021), many more undescribed novel species probably exist in the country.…”

“…Primer pairs used for amplification were as follows: nuc 28S rDNA D1-D2 domains (28S) with LR0R/LR5 ( Vilgalys and Hester, 1990 ; James et al, 2006 ) and the translation elongation factor 1-α gene ( TEF1 ) with EF1-α-F/EF1-α-R ( Mikheyev et al, 2006 ). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) conditions followed the program of Zhang Y. Z. et al (2021) .…”

“…However, the species diversity is poorly known in Asia in the past decades, and many specimens were named after European or North American species [ 6 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. In recent years, some new species were reported from Asia based on the combination of morphological characters and DNA phylogenetic analyses [ 6 , 7 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ]. Recent phylogenetic studies demonstrated that Cantharellus is monophyletic and forms a sister relationship with Craterellus Pers.…”
