Pinnularia qinghainensis: a new diatom species (Bacillariophyta) found in the brackish Lake Qinghai, China

Abstract: During the investigations of the diatom flora of Lake Qinghai, China (see Liu et al. 2020 for details), specimens of an undescribed species of Pinnularia Ehrenberg (1843: 45) were encountered, which are hereby illustrated and described.

“…These studies have provided a list of taxa, but lack useful illustrations (drawings or micrographs) for the taxa observed. However, some interesting new species recently published have been well documented (Peng et al 2014;2016;Liu et al 2020;Deng et al 2021), confirming that endemic diatom species inhabit this ancient lake. This paper provides further evidence of endemic taxa with the description of two new species of Entomoneis.…”

“…Measured in situ specific conductivity was 16.30 ± 0.09 mS•cm -1 , pH was 9.14 ± 0.01, and the water temperature was 15.5 ± 0.3 °C. Diatoma sinensis was found on submerged stones with yellow-brown surfaces, occurring with Berkeleya fennica Juhlin-Dannfelt (1882), Pinnularia qinghainensis Bing Liu & S. Blanco (Deng et al 2021), Entomoneis sinensis Bing Liu & D.M. Williams (Long et al 2022), E. qinghainensis Bing Liu and D.M.…”

“…Recently, more new species from Lake Qinghai belonging to the genera Ctenophora (Grunow) Williams and Round, Pinnularia Ehrenberg and Entomoneis (Ehren.) Ehrenberg have been published Deng et al 2021;Long et al 2022). Thus, there may be numerous endemics yet to be discovered and described from material collected in this ancient lake.…”

“…Hence Pinnularia is a very large and speciose genus, with numerous species described from Chinese material (e.g. Zhang et al (2016) ; Liu et al (2018a) ; Kociolek et al (2020) ; Deng et al (2021) ; Zhang et al (2022) ). The monograph of Krammer (2000) , which provides the descriptions and illustrations of many Pinnularia taxa, still represents a very valuable source for taxon identification, although numerous other references are also needed since many new Pinnularia species have been described in the 21 st century.…”

“…If the central area in Pinnularia exists, it can be hyaline without any ornaments, such as in P. lacustrigibba Poulíčková, D.G. Mann & Kollár ( Poulíčková et al 2018 ) and P. qinghainensis Bing Liu & S. Blanco ( Deng et al 2021 ) or it may have lunate markings on each side of the central nodule, such as in P. brandelii Cleve ( Krammer 2000 , plate 97, figs 7–12) and P. stomatophora (Grunow) Cleve ( Krammer 2000 , plate 100, figs 1–8). Interestingly, in the closely-related genus Caloneis , the lunate markings are more common.…”
